Construction works are underway at the Warszawa Zachodnia station, carried out by Budimex for PKP PLK. The general contractor, under the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme (OPI&E 5.1–13 and OPI&E 6.1–22), is responsible for the reconstruction of the station and the construction of an underground chamber for the future tram stop under the railway station.

The works are ongoing despite the winter period. There are currently 70 subcontractors and suppliers, 500 people and 150 units of equipment working on the construction site. Budimex has already carried out works covering m.in. necessary demolition of existing buildings, disassembly of lighting and postponement of collisions of underground installations. Works related to the reconstruction of the platforms and the construction of a new passage on level +1 above the platforms are currently underway. There is a temporary access to platform 8 of the ring line – the ZTM bus terminus on Tunelowa Street has also been moved by 200 m.

As part of the contract, Budimex will deal with the comprehensive reconstruction of about 30 km of tracks, 130 turnouts and the overhead contact line. New platforms will also be built, and the roofed station hall will be modernised to provide passengers with more comfortable travel conditions – The reconstruction of Warszawa Zachodnia is one of the most ambitious infrastructure concepts on the railways in recent years – says Artur Popko, Vice-President of Budimex. The Warszawa Zachodnia junction introduces and exits all rail traffic from the south and west to the capital, and we are working under active rail traffic all the time,” adds Artur Popko.

The general contractor started preparatory work, as part of which it took care of m.in. construction of a technological crossing between platforms 2 and 7, construction of foundation piles for the foundation of a footbridge on platforms 2 and 7 and works related to the introduction of temporary traffic organization on ul. Tunelowa. Recently, works related to the preparation of a temporary access to platform 8, the construction of a temporary bus terminus, walls for diaphragm walls and dismantling related to the construction of platforms have also been carried out on the construction site.

Warszawa Zachodnia is a strategic station in Poland in terms of passenger traffic with an average daily capacity of about 1000 passenger, agglomeration, regional, long-distance national and international, WKD and KM trains, as well as freight trains. This most popular railway station in our country is used by about 60 thousand people every day, and this number will gradually increase and, according to the latest forecasts, is expected to reach 120 thousand by 2030. The ongoing modernisation carried out by Budimex as part of the project entitled: “Works on the cross-city line on the Warszawa Wschodnia – Warszawa Zachodnia section” and the project “Construction of a tram route to Wilanów along with the purchase of rolling stock and accompanying infrastructure” is one of the most strategic railway projects in Poland in recent years.

The reconstruction of the Warszawa Zachodnia junction will last until 2023. The new track and platform system will enable trains to travel from the ring line to the Radom line and create direct connections between Piaseczno and Legionowo and Chopin Airport. There will also be a direct passage for passengers, connecting the cross-city line with the ring line.

Budimex SA is currently among the top two largest railway contractors in Poland. The general contractor is implementing such railway investments as: E30 Trzebinia – Krzeszowice, LK139 – Czechowice – Dziedzice, LK 7, reconstruction of the Gdynia Port Railway Junction and E59 Wronki.
