A bridge over the Vistula

Share article

It will be the largest extradosed* bridge in Europe.
The contract for the implementation of this investment was signed with the Gdańsk Branch of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways on 3 September 2010. Its net value is PLN 250.8 million.

The bridge over the Vistula will be built along the national road No. 90. It will connect the national road No. 1 – located on the western side of the river with the national road No. 55 – lying on its eastern side.

The bridge crossing consists of access flyovers over the floodplain and the main bridge.

The main route of the crossing will be 11.9 km long.

The following engineering structures will be built as part of it:

– a bridge over the Vistula River with a length of 808.5 m and a total width of 15.9 m,
– three flyovers with a total length of approx. 1 km,
– a bridge over the Struga Młyńska River (25 m) and over the Liwa River (51.6 m),
– three animal crossings, a utility passage and several culverts, serving as
at the same time, the function of passages for small animals.

The investment also includes the reconstruction of the intersection with the national road No. 91 (at the beginning of the designed section) and the construction of five new intersections – including two two-level intersections, a roundabout (at the end of the designed section) and 17 local and access roads with a total length of approx. 9 km. Budimex’s tasks also include sealing flood embankments and building over 7 km of noise barriers.

* The construction of an extradosed bridge of this scale is a pioneering project on a European and even global scale; so far, such facilities have been built in Japan (two) and Switzerland (one).

The extradosed bridge combines the idea of a cable-stayed bridge and a prestressed beam bridge. Some of the prestressing cables are routed outside the girder cross-section. The spans on this type of structures range from 100 to 200 meters. In the case of the crossing in Kwidzyn, the spans range from 130 to 204 m.

B80 class concrete was used for the construction of the bridge – this is the first use of concrete of such high strength in Poland, which results from the specificity of the bridge structure and the calculations made by the constructors.

The advantage of the solution, compared to a cable-stayed bridge, is the lower cost of construction (lower pylons and shorter shrouds). The extradosed bridge is also architecturally more interesting.

At the current stage, the works are carried out in shifts 24 hours a day, 6-7 days a week. Approx. 300 people, including approx. 200 on the bridge over the Vistula.

The works that are currently being carried out are:

bridge  over the Vistula:

– completion of the construction of the load-bearing structure: construction of the slab of the last segment of the bridge; after
the completion of concreting, the segment will connect the flyover with the bridge,

– construction of a pylon on a support located in the middle of the Vistula,

– construction of a support on the river bank on the Opala side,

– making anchoring of shrouds,

– preparatory work for prestressing inside the box (i.e. the load-bearing structure),

flyovers and small bridges:

– preparatory works for the replacement of bearings – the bearings were installed during the sliding of the flyover
Sliding

– finishing works

road works:

– laying bituminous surfaces,

– making noise barriers,

– finishing works.

The deadline for the completion of the works was set for 19 December 2012.
