On 27 September 2024, a contract was concluded between the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways, Olsztyn Branch, and Budimex SA for the construction of a route between Olsztyn and Barczew. The contractor will construct 11.4 km of the S16 section. The investment will improve communication of the local community as well as facilitate travel for tourists visiting the Land of the Great Lakes. Drivers will use the new expressway from Olsztyn in 2028. The net value of the contract amounts to PLN 412,530,636.
On the route of the current DK16 between Olsztyn and Biskupiec, commissioned in 2010, a nearly 30-kilometre S16 expressway will be built. The investment has been divided into two stages: Olsztyn – Barczewo and Barczewo – Biskupiec.
” I am glad that Budimex is in line with the activities and investment plans of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways. This year, we have signed contracts for nearly 100 km of roads commissioned by GDDKiA. The section of the S16 – Olsztyn East – Barczewo route that we will be implementing is particularly close to us. We built the Olsztyn bypass along the same route and the nearby Ostróda bypass along with the S5 Ornowo – Wirwajda. We know this area, we are mobilized and ready to implement this investment – said Jakub Długoszek, Director of Infrastructure Construction at Budimex SA.
The existing road will be adapted to S-class standards by adding a second roadway and rebuilding the structure of some of its sections. In addition, new roadways will be built to service the adjacent areas. As part of the investment, new road junctions Wójtowo and Łęgajny will be built, and the Barczewo, Kromerowo and Biskupiec junctions will be expanded and adapted to the parameters of the expressway. Self-sufficient lighting powered by renewable energy sources will be used. As part of the project, eleven new engineering structures will be built, and three pedestrian underpasses will be extended.
The modernisation of the DK16 section is of strategic importance for north-eastern Polish. The modern expressway will increase capacity, improve safety and reduce travel time. The investment will also contribute to the economic development of the region, attracting investors and tourists and facilitating the daily life of residents.
