As many as nine distinctions in the Construction of the Year 2023 competition went to Budimex

On September 24, the construction Oscars were awarded in the Construction of the Year 2023 competition. The Polish Association of Construction Engineers and Technicians thus awarded the best construction sites in the country in terms of engineering completed in 2023. As many as nine distinctions went to Budimex SA, including the most important – a special award – for the modernisation of the railway junction “LOT C, section Most Wisła – Czechowice-Dziedzice – Zabrzeg” and five first-degree awards.

 The “Construction of the Year” awards have been awarded for 33 years. It is a competition organized annually by the Polish Association of Construction Engineers and Technicians under the patronage of ministries, central units and interested organizations. Its purpose is to select and promote the best buildings, structures and investment processes on which outstanding implementation results have been achieved. The competition provides for the award of first degree prizes and the title of “Construction of the Year” as well as second and third degree prizes. In addition to the traditional statuettes and diplomas, the organisers are also awarding a special prize, which this year was awarded to the general contractor Budimex SA in Warsaw for the modernisation of the railway junction “LOT C, section Most Wisła – Czechowice-Dziedzice – Zabrzeg”. In total, Budimex received 9 distinctions in the “Construction of the Year 2023” competition: in addition to the special prize, five first-degree awards along with the titles of “Construction of the Year”, the prize pool is complemented by two second-degree and one third-degree awards.

 A special prize and the first degree prize and the title of “Construction of the Year 2023” in the category “Railway and tram facilities” were won by the modernization of the railway junction “LOT C, section Most Wisła – Czechowice-Dziedzice – Zabrzeg”. As part of the contract, Budimex SA constructed or reconstructed m.in 23 engineering structures, including 8 viaducts and 4 bridges, and replaced approximately 47 km of tracks and 56 km of overhead contact line. 3 rail-road crossings and platforms at the Czechowice-Dziedzice, Goczałkowice-Zdrój and Zabrzeg stations were modernized. As part of the contract worth PLN 1.5 billion, a modern Local Control Centre (LCS) was built. All works were carried out with active rail traffic.

 The first degree award and the title of “Construction of the Year 2023” were also won by:

• Railway bridge over the Regalica River in the category “Railway and tram facilities” – The aim of this investment was to increase the freedom of inland navigation, while ensuring the continuity of rail traffic on line No. 273. The existing bridge stopped the flow of ice at key moments of the action, and its low clearance “cut off” the icebreakers stationed below the bridge from the icebreaking area on the Oder.
• Integrated Communication Centre in Lublin in the category “Facilities assessed individually” – The new station is a three-storey building with a usable area of over 18,000 m2, with a “Park & Ride” garage for 174 cars, equipped with electric vehicle chargers. Attention is drawn to the roof of the building in the form of an observation deck, on which a recreational space for waiting passengers has been arranged.
• The Polish History Museum in the category “Objects assessed individually” – The central building of the Polish History Museum and the Polish Army Museum, serving as exhibitions and offices. The building has one high underground storey and four above-ground storeys for the most part. The Polish History Museum is to be visited by about 500,000 visitors a year.
• Also in the category “Objects evaluated individually”, the first degree award and the title of “Construction of the Year” were awarded to the extension of the Polish Theatre in Szczecin – a unique building in Polish and Europe, which currently has 5 modern stages, which can accommodate a total of nearly 1600 spectators. As part of the project, not only was the over 100-year-old pearl of modernist architecture modernized, but also a new building was built – located 2 m below sea level – with a modern reinforced concrete and glass structure, integrated into the Oder escarpment.

The second degree award in the “Road Facilities” category was awarded to the construction of the S-61 expressway on the Suwałki-Budzisko route and the Augustów bypass. The scope of work included the construction of a dual carriageway expressway of about 24.2 km long, with two road junctions: Suwałki Północ and Szypliszki. 5 car parks for travellers were also built as part of the Motorway Service Areas and a vehicle inspection area for road services. Two social buildings for passengers, with playgrounds for children, were erected along the expressway. 33 bridge structures were built along the entire section. During peak periods, about 600 workers and nearly 300 equipment units were employed on the construction site.

The second degree award in the category of Sports Facilities was awarded to the Construction of a sports and entertainment hall with land development, road system and parking lot as well as technical infrastructure in Gorzów Wielkopolski at 14 Słowiańska Street. Arena Gorzów is a hall adapted to organize various sports, entertainment and cultural events. During events, it can accommodate over 5000 spectators at sports events, and up to 6000 entertainment spectators.

The expansion of the tram depot in Olsztyn received the third degree award in the category “Railway and tram facilities”. It included the construction of a depot building, a garbage can, a sanding tank, a water treatment plant for the car wash, roads, tram tracks and external installations along with the demolition of the previous ones.

Budimex is a multiple winner of the award granted by the Polish Association of Construction Engineers and Technicians. Previously, the company received it for such investments as: the Research and Development Center of PKN Orlen in Płock, the Łagiewnicka Route and the Institute of Thermal Technology of the Warsaw University of Technology in Warsaw.
