Poznań has gained new spaces for lovers of walks and bicycle rides with a picturesque view of the riverside areas. On 28 February this year, the Berdychów Bridges were officially opened – the crossing over the Warta and Cybina rivers, which connected Chwaliszewo, Ostrów Tumski and Berdychowo. The investment carried out by Budimex has a chance to become another icon of the city, facilitating communication and encouraging residents and tourists to use this part of the city recreationally.

The Berdychów Bridges in Poznań are a structure consisting of two independent bridges: over the Warta River with a length of 165 meters and over the Cybina River with a length of 117 meters. The pedestrian and bicycle crossings were made in the technology of steel structure with reinforced concrete platform slabs. Specially designed pillars ensure the stability of the bridges and their resistance to changing weather conditions and the pressure of river waters. The buildings are characterized by a minimalist style, expressive form and economical detail, which fits in with the modern aesthetics of contemporary urban architecture in Poznań. The railings are equipped with integrated LED lighting, emphasizing the elegance of the structure and at the same time ensuring the safety of residents after dark.

“The new Berdychów Bridges are a unique investment that will not only improve communication in this part of Poznań, but also enrich the urban space with modern and functional solutions and will allow you to take advantage of the recreational potential of the areas by the Malta River. Thanks to the use of high-quality materials and advanced technologies, we have managed to create a safe, fully modern place adapted to the needs of pedestrians and cyclists”says Krzysztof Starkowski, Branch Director at Budimex SA.

The investment included not only the construction of the bridges themselves, but also the development of the adjacent areas. New accesses, stairs and ramps have been built to facilitate access to the crossing. The surroundings have been enriched with carefully selected greenery and elements of small architecture, such as benches and bicycle racks. The general contractor also used a non-slip surface on pedestrian and bicycle routes, which will increase the comfort and safety of users, especially on cold days.

The value of the project amounted to over PLN 156 million, and the construction included engineering works, including the assembly of steel structural elements, which were prefabricated and transported to the site in parts, which allowed them to be quickly assembled on the construction site.

The Berdychów Bridges are technologically advanced structures, the elements of which have been prefabricated in specialized plants – the M1 Bridge over the Warta River by Konstalex in Radomsko, and the M2 Bridge over the Cybina River by Mostostal Kraków. Nearly 2400 tons of high-strength S355 steel were used in their construction. The structure of each bridge consists of two key elements – arch and deck, connected in a way that ensures maximum stability and durability. The installation of the individual segments required the use of one of the largest mobile cranes available with a capacity of 1200 tonnes. The steel elements were protected with an anti-corrosive protective coating in class C5 – a system whose total thickness was min. 460 um. This system guarantees their resistance to weather conditions. In addition, to eliminate the risk of corrosion inside the structure, the enclosed spaces of the bridges were filled with an inert gas – nitrogen.

This is not the first investment of this type carried out by Budimex. In June 2024, the company completed the construction of a pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Vistula River in Warsaw. The modern crossing, designed with the comfort of pedestrians and cyclists in mind, quickly became an important element of the capital’s infrastructure. The Warsaw facility, like the Berdychowskie Bridges, is distinguished not only by its functionality, but also by its modern architecture referring to the riverside landscape.
