Budimex SA, the leading general contractor in the country, has completed a significant part of the construction works on the construction of the T3 Baltic Hub terminal at the Port of Gdansk, which allowed for the commercial launch of part of the terminal and the commencement of handling of the largest container ships at the new quay. It is the largest hydrotechnical project of this type implemented in Poland, as well as one of the largest such projects in the Baltic Sea region. The new container terminal will significantly increase the handling capacity of the Port of Gdansk.

The construction of the T3 terminal is the result of close cooperation between Budimex in an international consortium and DEME Dredging on behalf of Baltic Hub. The project included, among m.in, the creation of an artificial island, the dredging of the seabed, the construction of a 717-metre-long and 17.5-metre-deep deepwater quay, and the creation of a 36-hectare container yard. Thanks to the new terminal, the Baltic Hub will increase its handling capacity by another 1.5 million TEU per year – to 4.5 million TEU.

The T3 terminal is a strategic investment for the region and the entire Central and Eastern Europe. As a leading general contractor in Poland, we are proud of the fact that Budimex played a key role in the implementation of the project, thanks to which Gdańsk becomes one of the most important transshipment points in the Baltic Sea. It is an investment that not only sets new standards in the field of port infrastructure, but also contributes to the development of the Polish economy ,” emphasizes Cezary Łysenko, Operational Director of Infrastructural, Hydrotechnical and General Construction, Member of the Management Board, Budimex SA.

The construction of the T3 Baltic Hub Terminal was a serious engineering challenge for the contractors – the entire project was built on the water, as an extension of the existing structures of the T1 and T2 terminals. During the construction of the T3 Baltic Hub terminal, more than 17.5 thousand tons of steel, 160 thousand m³ of concrete and 4.3 million m³ of sand were used. The work was carried out 24/7, with the involvement of over 500 specialists, as well as with respect for the natural environment and the surrounding space. At the implementation stage, for example, modern solutions were used to reduce noise and systems protecting marine mammals against the effects of hydrotechnical works.

As part of the investment, a total of 7 modern STS cranes and 20 semi-automatic, remotely operated RMG cranes were ordered. The STS cranes arrived at the construction site by sea from China and were installed on the terminal wharf. Their height ranges from 96  to 140 meters with a raised boom, and each of them weighs nearly 2000 tons.

Budimex remains committed to the further development of port, rail and road infrastructure in Poland, implementing projects of strategic importance for logistics and freight transport in the region.
