Budimex SA, one of the leaders in infrastructure construction in Poland, has successfully completed work on the contract entitled “Improvement of rail access to the Sea Port in Gdynia”. The project, worth PLN 1.9 billion net, co-financed by the EU CEF “Connecting Europe” instrument, will significantly improve access to port quays and improve rail transport in one of the most important seaports in the country.

Under the contract, Budimex was responsible for the comprehensive reconstruction of the Gdynia Port railway station along with the pre-port areas and accompanying infrastructure, as well as the improvement of the related railway lines. Thanks to these modernizations, longer, 750-meter trains transporting goods will soon be able to reach the port, which will significantly increase the capacity and efficiency of logistics services.

The activities included a comprehensive reconstruction of the Port of Gdynia railway station, including the pre-port areas and accompanying infrastructure. Modernization works,
which involved nearly 600 people and 200 equipment units every day, included the modernization of 115 km of tracks, the installation of 359 turnouts and the electrification of access roads to the port.

We are currently at the stage of final acceptance, all basic works have been completed. A beautiful system  of as many as 39 tracks was created. This is undoubtedly the largest railway infrastructure contact in the history carried out by Budimex – says Piotr Czupryn, Director of Contact at Budimex SA.

Thanks to the completion of the construction, the number of trains serviced has increased, and at the same time the duration of cargo handling has been shortened. The investment has significantly improved transport capabilities in this part of Polish, which will soon translate not only into the development of the city and the region, but also the entire national transport. In addition, 13 km of roads, a railway bridge and 25 rail-road crossings were rebuilt. Two new railway viaducts, the building of the Local Control Centre, two railway signal boxes and a new office building of PKP Cargo were also built.

The completion of work on the contract in Gdynia is not only proof of our determination and competence, but also an important contribution to the development of railway infrastructure in Poland. By modernizing the railway junction, we have increased the capacity of trains almost fivefold. This opens up new opportunities for investors and transport companies. Thanks to this investment, we are also strengthening strategic transport links, which will contribute to increasing the efficiency and competitiveness of Polish ports on the international arena ,” says Dariusz Taraszkiewicz, Director of Region 1 of Railway Construction at Budimex SA.

The construction of railway infrastructure in the Port of Gdynia is not the only investment of Budimex in this area. As the leader of the consortium, it will build protective breakwaters for the Outer Port. As part of the order, almost 2.5 km of breakwaters are to be built. Its implementation was supported by a subsidy from the State Treasury. The investment will be implemented in the design and build mode. Design work with
obtaining a building permit are to take up to 490 days from signing the contract,
and construction works along with obtaining an occupancy permit up to 819 days from obtaining a building permit. The creation of the Outer Port is to allow for the handling of larger sea vessels and a larger number of ships.
