On 10 March 2025, Budimex S.A. signed a contract with the Port of Gdansk Authority S.A. for the expansion of the coal quay at the Port of Gdansk. As part of the contract worth over PLN 127 million gross, the company will modernize the quay with a total length of 546 meters, which will improve the port’s capacity and handling capacity.
Budimex has been selected as the general contractor for the extension of the Węglowe Quay in the Port of Gdańsk, with a length of 546 metres. The project consists of two stages: the first with a length of 252 meters and the second, with a length of 294 meters. The assumed deadline for the completion of the task is 130 weeks from the date of conclusion of the contract.
The investment is a key element in the modernisation of the internal part of the Port of Gdansk, enabling the handling of larger vessels. The project involves the use of a modern slab structure supported on reinforced concrete piles with a front steel, combined sheet pile wall with a reinforced concrete surface, railway tracks, crane rails, bollards with a load capacity of 1000 kN and point fender devices. The technical depth will be increased from 8 meters to 11.2 meters, which will enable the handling of ships with a draught of up to 10.6 meters. The conversion will provide greater durability and adaptation to handle ships with a deadweight of up to 35,000 DWT and under-carnage ships with a deadweight of 100,000 DWT.
” Budimex has extensive experience in the implementation of hydrotechnical projects, which allows us to effectively manage this type of contracts, both in technical and organisational terms. Thanks to proven engineering solutions and qualified staff, we can implement even the most demanding investments. We treat each project individually, adapting the technologies and work schedule to the specifics of a given task and the investor’s needs ,” says Grzegorz Małasiewicz, Hydrotechnical Director at Budimex S.A.
Budimex strengthens its position in the hydrotechnical sector
The signing of the contract for the expansion of the Węglowe Quay in the Port of Gdansk is further proof of Budimex’s strong position in the implementation of hydrotechnical projects in Poland. The company has extensive experience in the construction and modernization of port infrastructure and projects related to the expansion of quays and coastal land reinforcement.
Currently, Budimex is carrying out work on the construction of the modern T3 Baltic Hub container terminal in Gdańsk, which will significantly increase the port’s handling capacity. The scope of works includes, among m.in, hydrotechnical works, construction of a transshipment quay and accompanying infrastructure, including road and rail systems. Ultimately, this will enable the handling of larger vessels and increase the competitiveness of Gdansk as a port on the Baltic Sea. Budimex also carried out comprehensive hydrotechnical works along the Elbląg River, including bank lining over a length of 15 km and dredging works over a section of 3.8 km. At its peak, 350 people and 30 vessels were working on the construction site. The company is also responsible for the construction of the largest hydrotechnical investment in Poland – the flood control reservoir in Racibórz Dolny.
The expansion of the Węglowe Quay by Budimex, which is about to begin, is another step in strengthening the position of the Port of Gdansk as a key transport hub in the Baltic Sea. At the same time, this investment, along with other hydrotechnical projects carried out by Budimex, confirms the growing role of the company in the modernisation of Polish ports and coastal infrastructure.
