Budimex in innovative projects for the railway industry

Share article

The consortium of Budimex SA, the Railway Research Institute, the Institute of Environmental Protection – National Research Institute, TINES, led by the Warsaw University of Technology, is working on innovative devices for PKP PLK, reducing vibration and noise emissions.

InRaViS and InRaNoS are the names of projects aimed at  developing innovative solutions dedicated to the protection of people, buildings and the environment against noise
and vibrations caused by railway traffic. On the basis of numerical simulations, laboratory tests and tests conducted in real conditions, guidelines will be developed for the use of the developed devices on railway lines managed by PKP PLK SA.

As part of the InRaNoS (Innovative solutions for people and environment protection against rail traffic noise) project, two types of prototype noise reduction devices will be developed – rail and track silencers. The InRaViS  (Innovative solutions for people and buildings protection against rail traffic vibrations) project, on the other hand, assumes the development of four types of devices introduced by
in the construction of the railway superstructure, intended for ballast (vibro-insulating mats and under-base pads) and ballast-free (vibro-insulating under-plate mats and a system of block rail supports in the lagging)  structures of the railway superstructure.

The prototypes of the devices will be the result of material and geometric optimizations, as well as computer simulations and laboratory tests. They will be designed by analyzing the mechanisms of vibration and noise formation and reduction, as well as the effectiveness of their damping. The effectiveness of noise dampening prototypes will also  be tested using the impulse method on sections of the railway superstructure by the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Warsaw University of Technology. All the equipment, technically refined, will be manufactured by TINES, and its installation on the test sections of the experimental track of the Railway Institute in Żmigród will be carried out by Budimex SA.

Measurements of the noise level on the experimental track will be carried out by the Institute of Environmental Protection – National Research Institute, the level of vibrations transmitted to the surroundings of the route – by the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Warsaw University of Technology, and the level of impact in the rail vehicle – by the Railway Research Institute.

On the basis of the results of research and tests, guidelines for the use of devices will be developed in order to reduce the level of vibration and noise from railway traffic, and it will be possible to precisely select measures to minimize the scale of exceedances. The completion of the works is planned for May 2021.

The InRaViS and InRaNoS projects are co-financed by PKP PLK and the National Centre for Research and Development, from the European Regional Development Fund, as part of the competition No. 1/4.1.1/2017/POIR BRIK Joint Undertaking.
