Budimex is working on an innovative technology in the energy sector

Share article

A consortium consisting of representatives of Budimex SA, the Institute of Power Engineering-Research Institute and Mostostal Kraków is working on an innovative project called: SeNeX. The technology is to ensure the reduction of emissions of harmful substances from the combustion of hard coal in MCP grate boilers used in the power industry
in Poland.

This is another innovative project with the participation of Budimex. The largest Polish construction company is also working on innovations in the field of: asphalt production, road safety management: Safeway or increasing the functionality of BIM in the field of energy consumption monitoring, the so-called “Safeway”. BIMERR.

The new technology will be intended for the energy sector, especially heating and combined heat and power plants, as well as for industrial plants, such as sugar factories and chemical plants.

Why SeNeX

Inefficient combustion of fuels in boilers causes increased emissions of harmful products into the atmosphere, such as: carbon oxides, nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides, heavy metals and dust. These substances have a negative impact on both the environment and human health. The introduction of SeNeX technology will reduce pollutant emissions.

European Parliament and Council of Europe, 25 November 2015 issued Directive 2015/2193 on the limitation of emissions of pollutants into the air from the combustion of m.in. of hard coal in Medium Combustion Plants (MCP). The new emission standards from MCPs with a capacity of up to 50 MW are to be met from 01.01.2025.

Solving the problem of reducing pollutant emissions is therefore important for both ecological and economic reasons. Failure to meet the emission limits will result in at least financial penalties or an order to shut down the heating boiler. This may result in a reduction in the production capacity of plants,
with all the consequences of this.

Innovations for the thermal energy industry

The project will use patented lances mounted in the boiler. Thanks to this, it will be possible to precisely control the injection of reactants for the reduction of sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitric oxide (NOx) – in the appropriate temperature range inside the boiler and regardless of its load. The arrangement and position of the lances will be controlled by an appropriate algorithm. Industrial Research
and development projects, carried out by the consortium partners, will cover the model and operation of the selected boiler, and their purpose will be to indicate the optimal place to install the lances. The parameters of their operation will be determined, as well as an algorithm will be created to control the position of lances and the dosing of reducing agents.

As part of SeNex, a special installation was designed, the method of its implementation and the method of integration with the heating plant infrastructure. The project will end with testing, effectiveness assessment and technical and economic analysis of the proposed solution.

The project is co-financed by the National Centre for Research and Development, as part of Measure 4.1 of the Smart Growth Operational Programme 2014-2020. The first work on the SeNeX technology began in May 2019 and is scheduled for completion in February 2022.
