Residents of Żory can already use the new road viaduct along Dworcowa Street over the railway line and the Ruda River. The opening of the facility is one of the most important stages of the modernisation of railway line No. 148 on the Pszczyna – Żory section carried out by Budimex. The new crossing will improve the local communication system, improve the safety of all traffic participants and allow for further implementation of works. The investment is being carried out at the request of PKP PLK.
The opening of the viaduct is an important stage of the investment carried out as part of the revitalization of railway line No. 148. After the completion of the entire project, the modernized route will enable passenger and freight traffic at higher speeds, shortening the travel time between Pszczyna and Żory and increasing the capacity of this section of the railway network.
The new facility along Dworcowa Street has been designed with all users in mind. The viaduct carries road, pedestrian and bicycle traffic over the railway line and the Ruda River, eliminating the collision intersection with the tracks, significantly increasing the level of safety in this region. The structure, which is over 62 meters long, is equipped with a widened pedestrian passage, two elevators ensuring full accessibility for people with reduced mobility and stairs. An integral part of the investment is also a new bicycle path, included in the local route system.
– The construction of the viaduct was one of the most demanding elements of the entire investment. It required precise planning of works and close coordination of many industries in order to reduce difficulties for residents and ensure the continuity of work on the railway line. The commissioning of the facility is an important milestone of the project and confirmation of the competence of our teams, which implement modern infrastructure investments throughout Poland every day – says Wojciech Głuc, Director of the Budimex Branch.
As part of the project, Budimex also built a bridge over the Ruda River, which connected Starodworcowa and Kolejowa Streets and provided pedestrians with convenient access to elevators and stairs leading to the viaduct. The structure was made in frame technology with the use of prefabricated arched elements, and at the same time, the riverbed was strengthened, increasing the durability of the entire structure.
The implementation of the viaduct also included a comprehensive reconstruction of the road system. New access embankments were built, a roundabout integrating traffic from Fabryczna, Mikołowska, Piaskowa and Leśna streets. During the entire construction of the viaduct, over 2,800 m³ of concrete, 315 tons of reinforcing steel, as well as over 8 km of displacement piles were used to strengthen the ground for access to the facility. Over 69 thousand tons of aggregates were used for the construction and over 1,000 m² of reinforced soil walls were made.
