Budimex supported the Foundation for the Development of the University of Gdańsk, responsible for the Marine Station and Seal Centre in Hel. Thanks to the cooperation, the seal rehabilitation center received an advanced biochemical analyzer that will help restore the population of marine mammals – seals and porpoises. The device used to test the blood will significantly reduce the waiting time for results, thus increasing the chance of saving these animals. Employees of a local contract – the construction of the T3 container terminal in Gdańsk, carried out by a leader in the construction market, were involved in the campaign.
The main idea of the cooperation was to take care of the population of seals and porpoises, and thus ensure the protection of local biodiversity. As a conscious general contractor, Budimex goes beyond the framework of standard aid – due to the fact that the T3 project in Gdańsk is carried out entirely at sea, the protection of marine mammals is crucial here.
– Budimex is very often involved in activities for the local community, hence the idea of supporting the seal centre. Thus, the purchase of an analyzer for the blood of seals and porpoises was finalized. (…) The marine station is the national centre for the study of marine mammals, and the adjacent seal centre is the only rehabilitation centre for these animals in Poland,” says Anna Soszyńska, Environmental Protection Coordinator at the DCT Terminal T3 contract in Budimex.
The cooperation between Budimex and the UG Development Foundation is one example of a partnership initiative combining the forces of the private sector and NGOs for the common good. It is also a desire to show that involvement in such activities benefits not only the community, but is an integral part of sustainable business development.
– Until now, we had to deal with old equipment, where the waiting time for test results exceeded two hours. At the moment, thanks to the purchased equipment, we can reduce this time to 9 minutes. The shortened waiting time gives us the opportunity to make a diagnosis and save these animals right away,” says Marzena Chojnacka, President of the Management Board of the University of Gdańsk Development Foundation.
Known primarily as a tourist attraction, the Seal Centre in Hel, visited by over 300,000 people a year, is also a scientific centre and a place that cares about the health of the seal population. The Professor Krzysztof Skóra Marine Station of the University of Gdańsk in Hel runs a rehabilitation centre located here, which helps animals in need of care and treatment. His patients are mainly seal puppies, which, after being cured, fed and made sure that they are ready to live in the wild, are released back to the Baltic Sea.
The Baltic coast is a region where Budimex implements many investments important for the Polish economy and local communities. One of them is the construction of the T3 terminal in Gdańsk. The investment will increase the potential of Gdańsk as an important trade hub in the Baltic Sea. The expansion of the complex will increase the handling capacity to 4.5 million 20-foot containers per year. This means that T3 DCT Gdansk will be one of the largest container terminals in Europe. The project is scheduled to be completed in the second quarter of 2025.
In November this year, Budimex started the construction of an installation terminal for offshore wind farms. As part of the contract for over PLN 118 million, the company will build the first in Poland and at the same time one of the most modern installations of this type in Europe.
