On 8 January, Budimex S.A. signed a contract with the General Directorate for National Roads in Białystok for the construction of the S-61 expressway on the section from the end of the Suwałki bypass to Budzisko with the Szypliszki bypass. The implementation of the contract in the “redesign and build” system will last until October 2022.
The route covered by the works runs through the municipalities of Suwałki and Szypliszki in the Podlaskie Voivodeship and ends at the former border crossing with Lithuania in the city of Szypliszki. Budzisko. It is a part of the international transport corridor Via Baltica, an investment on a European scale, connecting the Baltic States with Western Europe. The S61 expressway is an important part of it, running through the following voivodeships: Mazowieckie, Podlaskie and Warmińsko-Mazurskie.
We are proud to be able to implement another, already the fourth, section of the route of such great importance not only on a Polish but also on a European scale. This is a huge project, requiring the involvement of not only many employees, but also equipment units. As part of the work, we will make m.in. earthworks at the level of approx. 8.9 million m³ and a main line with an area of 500 thousand. m² – says Dariusz Blocher, President of the Management Board of Budimex SA.
Under the contract, the company will build approx. 24 kilometers of dual carriageway expressway. The task, valued at PLN 1 billion 37 million, is to be completed within 32 months (including winter periods). The contract is the result of a tender announced by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways in 2019, after the termination of the contract with the previous contractor.
The contract with Budimex provides for the design, obtaining the legally required decisions and building permits and, as a result, the construction of a section of the S61 national road. The scope of the project also includes the construction of technical infrastructure necessary for the proper functioning of the expressway, including, m.in access roads, intended for local traffic, 34 engineering structures housing bridges, viaducts, culverts and animal crossings. Budimex will also deal with the system of environmental protection devices, m.in acoustic screens and safety devices. Existing roads and infrastructure facilities, such as gas and water supply networks colliding with the planned project, will also be rebuilt. The investment is covered by a five-year warranty.
This is not the only contract carried out by Budimex on the Via Baltica route. In 2019, Budimex completed work on an approximately thirteen-kilometre section of the Suwałki City Bypass, which is an extension of the S61 expressway also built by Budimex and put into service in 2014 as part of the Augustów bypass. Currently, it is implementing two more fragments of the Via Baltica route: the over 18-kilometer section of Stawiski-Szczuczyn and the 20-kilometer section of Wysokie-Raczki. The total value of all investments currently carried out by Budimex S.A. within the S61 is over PLN 2 billion.
