Completion of an important stage of the modernization of the Gdynia Port railway junction

In March, Budimex completed the first stage of works related to the reconstruction of the Gdynia Port railway junction. The main objective of the implemented activities is to improve the capacity of the strategic railway junction and increase the amount of transported cargo. Budimex has already completed over 55% of all works covered by the contract.

Budimex is responsible for m.in under the contract. for the reconstruction of the Gdynia Port  railway station along with the modernization of connections to the quays and accompanying infrastructure. As part of the first stage of the investment, the general contractor completed m.in. track, drainage, road, cubature works, related to the overhead contact line and railway traffic control. From now on,  traffic is carried out from the new GPB LCS signal box building. The value of the works performed under this part of the contract is approx. PLN 850 million net. On average, 480 people and 150 equipment units work on the modernization of the Port of Gdynia station every day.

 The scope of works performed since the start of works:

  • installation of turnouts and intersections: 180 pcs.
  • laying of track surface: 60 km
  • Construction of cable lines: 160 km
  • construction of lighting poles: 570 pcs.
  • installation of overhead contact line : 30 km
  • installation of poles, overhead contact line gates: 800 pcs.
  • cable network construction: 200 km
  • Cable duct construction: 20 km
  • installation of signalling devices and SRK devices: 1050 pcs.

The reconstruction of the Port of Gdynia railway junction is an extremely important infrastructure investment for the city, the region and the entire national transport. After the completion of the construction, the number of trains handled will increase and at the same time the duration of cargo handling will be shortened. In addition, longer, 740-metre trains transporting larger quantities of goods will be able to run on Gdynia’s tracks. Thanks to this investment, transport capacity in this part of Polish will increase significantly – says Maciej Olek, Director of Railway Construction at Budimex SA.

As part of the entire investment, 115 km of tracks, over 350 turnouts will be modernized and access roads to the port will be electrified. 13 km of roads, a railway bridge and 2 rail-road crossings will be rebuilt. In addition, communication will be facilitated by two new railway viaducts. The contract also includes the construction of the Local Control Centre building, two railway signal boxes, the PKP Cargo office building and the renovation of three existing signal boxes. The investment is co-financed by the EU funds of the CEF “Connecting Europe” instrument, and its total cost is PLN 1.5 billion net.

The planned date of completion of the contract, including certification and all necessary acceptances  , is August 31, 2023. The investor is PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe SA.

Budimex is one of the leaders in railway construction in Poland. The company is currently implementing contracts such as m.in. the new Warszawa Zachodnia station, which is one of the largest investments of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe SA. Currently, Budimex is also responsible for the reconstruction of the Ełk station and the Czechowice Dziedzice station. Work is also underway to complete the modernization of the E59 railway line section E59. Rokietnica – Wronki and reconstruction of a section of the E30 Trzebinia-Krzeszowice railway line. In 2021. Budimex has completed the modernisation of railway line No. 7 Warsaw – Lublin on the Otwock-Pilawa and Dęblin-Nałęczów sections.
