Cornerstone for the Sports Centre of the University of Gdańsk

On Monday, April 28, 2025, the cornerstone laying ceremony for the construction of a modern Sports Center was held at the University of Gdańsk in Gdańsk-Oliwa. The investment, whose general contractor is Budimex SA, is one of the key investments in sports infrastructure for the university, but also for local residents.

The Sports Centre of the University of Gdańsk is being built at 31 Wita Stwosza Street and will be one of the most modern facilities of this type in the region. It will serve both students, university employees and residents of Gdańsk, offering wide access to various forms of physical activity and the possibility of organizing sports events.

The cornerstone laying ceremony was attended by, m.in, the Minister of Sport, Sławomir Nitras, as well as representatives of the University of Gdańsk, headed by the Rector, Prof. Piotr Stepnowski. Also present were the representatives of the contractor – Regional Director Paweł Majkowski from Budimex SA.

The ceremony of laying the cornerstone is a symbolic, but very important moment for the entire project,” says Paweł Majkowski, Regional Director at Budimex SA.We are glad that it is Budimex that can implement an investment that will serve not only the academic community, but also the residents of Gdańsk. The first stage of the investment includes the construction of a sports hall equipped with
a full-size basketball, volleyball and futsal court, an auditorium for 270 people and technical, social and administrative facilities. It will also include: a modern gym, fitness, cardio, martial arts and physical and musical exercise rooms, as well as a wellness zone. The facility will be fully adapted to the needs of people with disabilities.

The next phases of the investment provide for the construction of, m.in others, a tennis hall, outdoor basketball and beach sports courts, tennis courts and a full-size football field. The last stage of the construction of the Sports Centre of the University of Gdańsk will be the construction of a swimming pool with a 25-metre swimming pool.

Budimex implements each investment with care for the natural environment, which is why the preparatory works were carried out under environmental supervision, due to the breeding season of birds. Budimex will also carry out replacement plantings in connection with the
with the need to remove some trees and shrubs from the construction site.

The project should be completed at the end of 2026, and the contract value amounts to over PLN 61 million.

Budimex has extensive experience in the construction of sports facilities. In recent years, the company has built, m.in: the Sports and Entertainment Hallin Ziębice, capable of accommodating 700 spectators; the Sports Games Hall of the Academy of Physical Education in Krakow, which was one of the locations of sports games at the European Games Krakow-Małopolska; Sports and Rehabilitation Centre of the Medical University of Warsaw; The city stadium in Lublin and the Park of Active Rehabilitation and Sports at the Prof.
F. Łukaszczyk in Bydgoszcz, which was awarded the title of “Construction of the Year 2012”.
