September 2025 marks one year since the official start of the construction of a multimodal hub for the handling of goods and fuels based on a railway siding at the Wojciech Korfanty International Airport “Katowice” in Pyrzowice. The investment is being implemented with the support of funds from the European Union under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) 2021-2027 Military Mobility. A consortium of Mostostal Kraków S.A. and Budimex S.A. is responsible for the execution of construction works.
The project entitled “Construction of a multimodal hub for the handling of goods and fuels based on a railway siding at Katowice Airport” is being developed in the south-eastern part of Katowice Airport. The project includes, m.in, the construction of a siding connecting Katowice Airport with the Central Railway Trunk Line via railway line No. 182 (Tarnowskie Góry – Zawiercie). The heart of the investment will be a railway unloading front with three 300-metre-long shutdown tracks, each which will be used for loading goods and fuel. It will be adjacent to four tanks with a capacity of 1000m3 each, as well as tanker truck unloading stations and a ramp enabling the unloading of m.in containers. In the part located in the restricted zone of Katowice Airport, filling stations for airport tankers will be built.
“The construction of a multimodal cargo and fuel handling hub based on a siding at Katowice Airport is part of a comprehensive investment program that we started in 2024 and will last until 2032. The new infrastructure, built with the support of funds from the European Union, will allow GTL S.A. to launch a new area of activity in the form of a point enabling, m.in, the storage and transport of aviation fuel using rail. The node will significantly improve the process of fuel delivery to Katowice Airport and its distribution at the airport,” says Artur Tomasik, President of the Management Board of Upper Silesian Aviation Society S.A.
“A year after the start of the construction of the multimodal hub for the handling of goods and fuels at Katowice Airport, we are entering the most important stage of this implementation. We are completing the assembly of steel storage tank structures and starting the stage of assembling the transmission technology. The works are proceeding according to schedule” – says Jakub Kościesza, Director of the Contracts Team at Mostostal Kraków S.A.
“The implementation of this investment is another example of the Budimex Group’s commitment to creating the most modern logistics infrastructure in Poland. The assumption of the project is to achieve full multimodality of the transshipment HUB being created, and based on this assumption, we are carrying out our engineering works, which we plan to finalize in the second half of 2026. The project assumes maximum use of warehouse space and the potential of transport infrastructure, which, properly coordinated, will become a modern logistics center, meeting the needs of both civil and state security. A key element is also the fruitful cooperation and synergy within the Budimex Group – with Mostostal Kraków, which brings unique competences and experience to the project, significantly contributing to the efficient implementation of the investment,” says Grzegorz Warych, Contract Manager at Budimex S.A.
The multimodal hub for the handling of goods and fuels will enable the handling of various types of cargo, including aviation fuel, as well as the refuelling of all aircraft operating at Katowice Airport. The infrastructure will have a positive impact on reducing road transport in favour of railways, which is part of the process of supporting the development of a sustainable transport system. The point will be adapted to handle alternative fuels (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) in order to improve energy efficiency and reduce climate emissions. It will also be adapted for dual civil-military use, which will make it possible to secure supplies and continuity of operations in relation to ongoing military operations. The entire project is interoperable, which means that the new infrastructure will be intended for use by all interested entities using the airport’s services – both civil and military.
The cost of the project, including the fourth tank, is over PLN 130 million net, and the amount of EU support – in accordance with the co-financing agreement signed by the Upper Silesian Aviation Society S.A. and the European Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and Environment (CINEA) – will amount to 50% of eligible costs (up to EUR 10.09 million). The completion of the construction of the multimodal hub for the handling of goods and fuels is planned for the second half of 2026.
