The construction of a new railway bridge over the Regalica River in Szczecin is underway. The first structural elements of the new crossing are already visible. Budimex has been carrying out works for several months at the request of the State Water Holding Polish Waters, the Regional Water Management Authority in Szczecin and PKP PLK.
The scope of works includes the construction of a crossing in a new track, in the vicinity of the current bridge. The crossing will consist of two steel, three-span truss structures, for each of the tracks separately, set on common abutments and pillars. The bridge structure will be raised 6.2 m above the high water level. The old structure will be almost completely demolished, only the drawbridge span entered in the register of monuments will be preserved, along with its immediate surroundings.
The aim of the investment is to increase the freedom of inland navigation while ensuring the continuity of rail traffic along railway line No. 273. The net value of the contract is PLN 282 million. The investment is carried out in the “build” formula and is financed by the World Bank, the European Union and the state budget.
The entire track system of the station will be moved to the south, the location of the turnout heads will change, the geometric layout will be adapted to the terrain conditions. As part of the investment, Budimex will build approx. 12 km of new tracks, adapted to the required speeds and load capacity. All the built-up tracks will be electrified, and a new overhead contact line will be hung that meets the required standards. A modern, electronic railway traffic control system will also be built, replacing the current mechanical devices. The construction of 25 new turnouts is planned, including arch turnouts at the line leading towards the bridge and to include railway line No. 428 in the track system of the station.
A new, double-edged platform at the Szczecin Podjuchy station, 400 m long, and a new signal box building will be built – replacing the current 2 ones, as well as an underground passage with a roof and elevators. As part of the construction works, a new railway viaduct will be built in the immediate vicinity of the bridge over ul. Glass.
– The residents of Szczecin can already observe how quickly the works on the reconstruction of the bridge are progressing. The scale of the investment can be seen when travelling by train, but also standing, for example, on the Griffin Bridge. The pace of work heralds that the crossing will be ready in December 2023. This is one of the most important infrastructural tasks carried out by Polish Waters in our country, we are eliminating the bottleneck that hinders both navigation and actions to protect residents from flooding. After the reconstruction, we will be able to carry out the icebreaking action without any complications, disturbances and blockades determined by the technical conditions of the bridge over the Regalica. It will be a modern, comfortable and safe crossing – says Marek Duklanowski, Director of Polish Waters in Szczecin.
“We are very happy that we can implement such an important and long-awaited investment. The construction of a new bridge over the Regalica River will eliminate the collision of train traffic with the movement of rolling stock floating on the international inland waterway. The capacity of railway line No. 273 and flood safety will also increase. At the same time, it is a very important investment for our company as a general contractor. It connects the bridge and railway ranges, but at the same time serves inland navigation – says Cezary Łysenko, Director of Infrastructure Construction at Budimex SA.
Budimex specialises as a general contractor, m.in. in the construction of bridge and hydrotechnical structures. In 2020, the company built a flood control reservoir for the Odra River – it is the largest such facility in Poland. In 2021, Budimex also completed the expansion of Europe’s largest tailings pond – Żelazny Most. Currently, the company is implementing m.in. the construction of the Vistula Spit Canal, the construction of flood embankments on the Oder River and the construction of a pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Vistula, which is to connect the centre of Warsaw with Praga Północ.
