Progress of works on the modernization of the Port of Gdynia railway junction

August 10, 2022 Budimex has commissioned the P1 signalling district as part of the contract “Improvement of rail access to the Sea Port in Gdynia”. The completed works have significantly improved access to the port quays (Dutch, Swedish, Silesian and French), which is of key importance for improving rail transport in the port of Gdynia. The recommended date of completion of the contract, including certifications and acceptances, is dated August 31, 2023. The investor is PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe SA.

The main objective of the activities carried out under the contract is to improve the capacity of the strategic railway junction and increase the amount of transported cargo. Budimex is responsible for m.in under the contract. for the reconstruction of the Port of Gdynia railway station together with the pre-port areas and accompanying infrastructure, and the improvement of the related railway lines.

–  We have made 21 tracks and 30 turnouts available for rail traffic, along with complete power, teletechnical, drainage and sanitary infrastructure. Road systems with rail-road crossings were also put into operation. The entire track systems put into operation were included in the computer control of the previously commissioned P1 control room. The rebuilt range of the P1 signalling circle constitutes 1/3 of the entire Port of Gdynia station. This is a milestone on the way to completing the entire modernization of this investment, which is of key importance from the point of view of accessibility to the port. – says Maciej Olek, Director of Railway Construction at Budimex SA.

As part of the entire investment, 115 km of tracks will be modernized and access roads to the port gates will be electrified. 13 km of roads, a railway bridge and 29 rail-road crossings will be rebuilt. In addition, communication will be facilitated by two new railway viaducts. The contract also includes the construction of the Local Control Centre building, two railway signal boxes, the PKP Cargo office building and the renovation of three existing signal boxes. The investment is co-financed by the EU funds of the CEF “Connecting Europe” instrument, and its total cost is PLN 1.5 billion net.

Budimex is one of the leaders in railway construction in Poland. The company is currently implementing contracts such as m.in. the new Warszawa Zachodnia station, which is one of the largest investments of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe SA. In 2021. Budimex has also completed the modernisation of the Warsaw-Lublin railway line.
