In April, it will be one year since the signing of the contract for the second stage of the construction of the waterway connecting the Vistula Lagoon with the Gulf of Gdańsk. This stage of the investment consists in the construction of the banks of the Elbląg River, the reconstruction of teletechnical and power collisions, as well as the construction of a section of the county road and a swing bridge over the Elbląg River.

– The new infrastructure solution will be the driving force behind the economic development of the entire region. On this occasion, it is worth noting that this year we will put into use over 400 km of expressways. The new waterway is part of a number of activities improving communication in Poland, both in land and water traffic – said Minister of Infrastructure Andrzej Adamczyk.

– The government investment, consisting in the creation of a new waterway from the Gulf of Gdańsk to the port of Elbląg, in accordance with the resolution of the Council of Ministers, will be completed in 2023. The works under the second stage include, among others, a new road solution with an over one hundred meter long swing bridge, eliminating the communication barrier in Nowakowo – adds Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Marek Gróbarczyk.

Currently, as part of the investment, the contractor of the second stage, Budimex, is carrying out hydrotechnical works, such as: driving a sheet piling, demolition works of the existing reinforcements along with pre-treatment works, micropile works, reinforced concrete works have also begun.

 – A new swing bridge is being built, which will replace the current, difficult to navigate crossing in Nowakowo. As part of the second stage of the investment, the banks of the Elbląg River are also being built over a length of about 10.5 km, which is to allow for the creation of a new waterway. Another very important project is the construction of 1.5 km of a new county road, which will connect to the new swing bridge – says Andrzej Małkiewicz, Head of the Investment Implementation Department of the Maritime Office in Gdynia.

4 sets for the installation of sheet piles that work from water and 3 sets operating from land have been installed. Micropiles are installed with 3 bolters, in the near future 3 more will be mobilized to anchor the wall from water.

– We are performing a number of works at the second stage of the construction of the Vistula Spit Canal, m.in. works related to the construction of a new bridge in Nowakowo. These activities include the installation of tongs on the sheet piling and the preparation of platforms for soil reinforcement, as well as the construction of CFA piles for bridge abutments. We also carry out works related to connections, removal of collisions, as well as water supply works and sanitary installations says  Bartosz Michalski, Site Manager at Budimex SA.

There are about 12 vessels on the construction site – pontoons operated by pushers. Over 9.5 thousand will be submerged. pieces of sheet piles and over 4.5 thousand pieces of sheet piles made. micropiles, with a total length of over 163 km.

– Nowakowo, where the second stage of the investment is being implemented, as an island is connected to the mainland by a pontoon bridge, which in the period before the investment was a navigational obstacle. The new rotating  bridge with a span of 103 meters will rotate around a vertical axis of rotation – i.e. it will be drawn, not drawn. The bridge is also to take into account road solutions. It is the third swing bridge built as part of the entire investment. The other two were carried out as part of the first stage by the NDI/Besix consortium. We were able to drive through the Southern Bridge until December last year, currently the traffic is on the Northern Bridge – comments Wiesław Piotrzkowski, Director of the Maritime Office in Gdynia.

The contractor for the second stage of the construction of the waterway connecting the Vistula Lagoon with the Gulf of Gdańsk is Budimex S.A. The contract value is over  PLN 574 million, and the time provided for its implementation is 24 months (the contract was signed on 20 April 2021).

The first stage, including works on the Gulf of Gdańsk, the Vistula Spit and the Vistula Lagoon, is being carried out by a consortium of NDI/Besix companies. The investor, the Maritime Office in Gdynia, is currently in the process of preparing a new tender for the implementation of the third stage – dredging of the fairway on the Vistula Lagoon. After the completion of the whole, the new waterway will enable vessels up to 100 meters long, up to 20 meters wide and with a draught of 4.5 meters to enter the port of Elbląg.
