By the end of December, Budimex will have completed work on the modernisation of the railway part of the Warszawa Zachodnia station. Passengers will be able to use the new underground passage after the construction of part of the facility carried out by Warsaw Trams. By that time, PLK SA will have completed the process of renting commercial premises.

Since June, passengers at the Warszawa Zachodnia station have already been using all 9 platforms. Now, by the end of December, the contractor will complete the works on the railway part of the underground passage and thus all the scopes of the investment on the side of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. have been finalized. In order for passengers to be able to use the new facility, works related to the construction of the tram part must be completed. This stage is planned by the middle of the year and after the final acceptances, passengers will be able to go underground.

The new underground passage is longer and wider than the previous one. The facility allows access to all 9 platforms from both Wola and Ochota. Elevators and escalators have been installed in it, which will make it easier for passengers to enter the platforms. Ultimately, it will house ticket offices, waiting rooms and service premises. Currently, convenient access to trains is provided by a built footbridge, from which you can go down by elevators to level “0”.

– By the end of 2024, we plan to launch elevators connecting all platforms with the footbridge over them. At the turn of 2024 and 2025, buses will return to the final stop at the station on Tunelowa Street. From there, passengers will be able to go to the footbridge that leads to platforms 1-8, or use the underground passage that leads to platform 9,” announced Piotr Wawrzycki, Regional Director, Budimex SA.

In November, PLK SA started the procedure related to the commercialization of retail and service space at the Warszawa Zachodnia station. The largest transport hub in the capital, after the completion of the modernization, it will also become a shopping center that will attract thousands of customers every day. 26 premises have been located in the underground passage and negotiations with bidders are currently underway.

“In addition to the work on the station hall, we have already planted about 100 trees and over 3.5 thousand shrubs on this project, and we will arrange lawns on an area of 460 m²,” says Patryk Jaworski, construction manager at Budimex. “An important element is also the bicycle path marked out along the road, which is to split, allowing cyclists to enter the footbridge over the platforms via a ramp. There are also plans for an exit ramp from Jerozolimskie Avenue. The footbridge, which we commissioned a few years ago, has an appropriate load capacity, which allows even an ambulance to enter and turn back to help travelers. The second branch of the bicycle path leads directly to the new station hall, where we have provided bicycle racks, and in case of greater interest of cyclists, we have also prepared a reserve parking space for two-wheelers.

The modernization of Warszawa Zachodnia is one of the largest investments of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. in the country. All platforms are roofed. Escalators, elevators, a dynamic information system and wide passages will facilitate access to trains. It will be easier to combine rail travel with public transport. Safe management of railway traffic will be ensured by modern equipment and computer systems. The project “Works on the cross-city line in Warsaw on the section Warszawa Wschodnia – Warszawa Zachodnia” is worth approx. PLN 2 billion net.
