The building of the Institute of Thermal Technology, modernised by Budimex, put into use

On 18 September this year, the historic building of the Institute of Thermal Technology of the Warsaw University of Technology, rebuilt and expanded by Budimex, was officially put into use. The subsequent stages of modernization gained industry recognition and were awarded in the prestigious “Construction of the Year” plebiscite organized by the Polish Association of Construction Engineers and Technicians in cooperation with the Ministry of Construction and the Central Office of Building Supervision.

The building of the Institute of the Thermal University of Technology, at 21/25 Nowowiejska Street in Warsaw, was built in the 50s of the twentieth century and in 2015 it was entered on the list of monuments. The works carried out by Budimex SA were aimed at modernising this building – including the recovery of historic elements and combining them in the right way with the elements of the extension. The renovation was carried out under the supervision of a monument conservator.

“We are proud that we were able to modernize the historic building of the Institute of Thermal Technology and improve its daily use by students. Especially that as a general contractor, we have been working closely with the Warsaw University of Technology and its students for years, conducting an internship program on construction sites.Our specialists, despite many challenges related to the conservation requirements of the historic building, carried out all the works as planned,” said Artur Popko, President of Budimex.

The modernization took place in two stages. In the first phase, works were carried out on the reconstruction of hall C and the extension of the courtyard roof. In the second phase, the interior of the historic building was rebuilt, eliminating, m.in the non-functional staircase. The renovation covered a total of three wings of the building (B, C and D), as well as the courtyard and the fire road. The building has undergone conservation and renovation of historic elements of m.in the façade, boiler room (conveyor belt, feeder, boiler, measuring cabinet), Laval steam turbine, and double-girder crane. As a result of the work carried out, the Institute of Thermal Technology of the Warsaw University of Technology gained new teaching and laboratory space.

The building also has mechanical ventilation installations, air conditioning, technological installations, central heating, water and sewage, water supply, fire protection, roof drainage and water mist. The building has been newly equipped with electrical, lightning protection and teletechnical installations.

The entire work was carried out within 39 months. The gross value of the contract is over PLN 98 million.
