The new T3 Baltic Hub container terminal in Gdansk, built by the consortium of Budimex and Deme Dredging, has reached 60% of the work progress. On June 5, the cornerstone was ceremonially laid on the investment site, where the third quay will be built Deep-sea. This is a key stage of construction, increasing the handling capacity of the Baltic Hub by 1.5 million TEU (a unit of measurement corresponding to the dimensions of a container used in transport) to a total of 4.5 million TEU per year. The planned completion of work on T3 is 2025.

The Budimex Group is implementing a project to build the largest container terminal in the Baltic Sea region – T3 Baltic Hub. The investment is to strengthen Polish’s position in the international arena as an important transport hub. As part of the investment, the value of which is EUR 470 million, a deep-water quay with a length of 717 m, a depth of 18 m and a square with an area of 36 ha will be built. The official laying of the foundation stone also means that the terminal’s handling capacity will increase from the current 3 to 4.5 million TEU per year, making it one of the largest facilities of this type in Europe.

In addition, the project will include the purchase of 8 quay cranes capable of loading and unloading the world’s largest ships and 28 semi-automatic RMG cranes, which will be remotely controlled by operators at ergonomic stations. This will create a much safer and more comfortable working environment all year round.

T3 will be the largest container terminal in Poland, and the only deep-water seaport in the Baltic States. We are aware of the importance of this investment for the development of trade in the Baltic Sea, as well as the economic development of the entire country. The new terminal will make it possible to receive even the largest container ships and launch direct connections with Asia. It will also expand the area of Polish by over 36 hectares” – said Artur Popko, President of Budimex S.A.

Work is currently focused on the implementation of two milestones:

  • Sectional Completion A in June this year – this will enable the delivery and installation of C-ARMG cranes.
  • Sectional Completion B by the end of August this year – concerns the complete execution of the first 4 container stacks for testing and commissioning of C-ARMG cranes.

Other works include m.in. reinforced concrete works on the cap of the drainage and land beams, assembly of rails for CRMG cranes, cubature works, industry and earthworks.

Environmental protection is Budimex’s priority

The latest technologies have also been used in the construction of the T3 terminal, thanks to which the natural environment in which the terminal is built will remain intact. Monitoring of the state of the environment is carried out and noise below and above ground is examined. In addition, special deterrent devices are used to protect marine mammals. Thanks to these activities, the project is part of the policy of sustainable development and enrichment of the natural heritage of this area. The works began in November 2022 and are scheduled to be completed in 2025.

This is not the only example of the Budimex Group’s activities aimed at actively protecting the Baltic coast region. The company also supported the University of Gdańsk Development Foundation, responsible for the Marine Station and the Seal Centre in Hel, which received an advanced biochemical analyser to effectively help rebuild the population of marine mammals. By performing blood tests, the device significantly reduces the waiting time for results, thus increasing the chance of saving these animals. Employees of a local contract – the construction of the T3 container terminal in Gdańsk – were involved in the action
