Budimex will start construction of a new Podłęże-Piekiełko railway line in Podhale

On 11 May 2023, Budimex signed a contract with PKP PLK for the implementation of the first stage of the modernisation and construction of the new Podłęże-Piekiełko railway line in Podhale. The net value of the contract is PLN 366,057,633.33.

Budimex will thoroughly modernise a 6-kilometre section of railway line No. 104 Chabówka – Nowy Sącz on the section 104 Chabówka – Nowy Sącz. A1 from km 0+576 (km 0+576) to km 6+100 (km istn.6+109) along with the technical infrastructure along the railway line No. 104 from the Chabówka station to the Rabka Zaryte station. Works will also be carried out along the railway line No. 98 Sucha Beskidzka – Chabówka on the section No. from km istn. 33+830 to km istn. 35+313 and at the Chabówka station.

The signing took place at the Ministry of Infrastructure of the Republic of Poland with the participation of Andrzej Adamczyk – Minister of Infrastructure and Ireneusz Merchel – President of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe.

Budimex will start preparatory works for construction in accordance with the contract immediately after signing. This reconstruction is very demanding in terms of deadlines and characteristics of the mountainous areas in which the works will be carried out.  We have 24 months to complete the project, but we have proven with the investments already completed for PKP PLK and those currently being carried out that we will meet any requirements – said Artur Popko – President of the Management Board of Budimex during the signing of the contract.

The contract was signed on the part of Budimex by Maciej Olek – Member of the Management Board of Budimex. The warranty period for the work performed will be 6 years. As the current railway line is single-track on this section, train traffic on this section will be suspended during the works. The modernization will also include the construction of a second track.  In addition to tracks, engineering structures and railway traffic control equipment, stations and stops will be rebuilt. The new platforms will be m.in. at the Rabka Zaryte station and at the Rabka Zdrój stop. The new facilities will be adapted to the needs of people with reduced mobility. At the Rabka Zaryte station, an underground passage with an elevator is also planned, which will increase accessibility to the railway.

The line is also a part of the complementary TEN-T (Trans-European Transport Network) network Modernized railway line 104 Chabówka – Nowy Sącz, designed railway line No. 622 podg. Podłęże R401 – Tymbark and railway line No. 623 podg. Fornale – Szczyrzyc are a fragment of spoke 7.2.1 of the railway component of the task related to accessibility to the Central Communication Port. It is also planned to include the newly designed railway line No. 622 and a fragment of the railway line No. 104 Tymbark – Nowy Sącz in the European Rail Freight Transport Corridor No. 11 “Amber” (RFC 11).

Budimex has implemented m.in under the previous EU perspective. such railway investments as: railway connection in Kraków, LCS Olszamowice, LK7 on the Otwock – Nałęczów section,  LCS Idzikowice, E30 Trzebinia – Krzeszowice or E59 Rokietnica-Wronki.  Currently, Budimex is implementing railway contracts with a total value of PLN 2.4 billion, including: the Warszawa Zachodnia station, the Ełk station, the Czechowice-Dziedzice railway junction and the Port of Gdynia.
