The Directorate of Roads and Motorways of the Czech Republic (RSD) has selected Budimex’s bid as the most advantageous in the tender procedure for the construction of a 7.6-kilometre section of the D35 motorway from Džbánov to Litomyšl. On 7 March, the parties signed an agreement worth PLN 641 million (CZK 3,423 million). Under the contract, a total of 147 structures will be built, including bridges, viaducts, flyovers and 6.3 km of noise barriers. About 16 km of local roads will also be rebuilt. The construction of the section is to be completed in 2027.

The section being developed by the Polish company is part of the future D35 motorway – an alternative road to the congested D1 motorway and an important part of the transport system and road network of the Czech Republic. The D35 is the northern connection between Bohemia and Moravia and is important in international traffic.

“Choosing our offer strengthens Budimex’s position on the Czech market, where over the last 2 years we have submitted over 30 bids for a total amount of CZK 65 billion. The construction of such an important section for the national road network is also an excellent opportunity to transfer abroad our know-how and best practices, gained during the construction of hundreds of kilometers of motorways in Poland – says Artur Popko, President of the Management Board of Budimex SA.

The construction route of the section, which is expected to start at the beginning of the second quarter of 2024, starts after the Džbánov junction, where it connects to the previous section of this motorway D35 Vysoké Mýto – Džbánov. It then runs through scattered buildings to the south of the existing I/35 road, and after crossing it, it runs on the north-western side of Litomyšl and connects to the D35 Litomyšl – Janov motorway section.

As part of the works, Budimex will build the main section of the road with a length of 7,589 metres and 9 bridges with a total length of 1,137 metres (including two flyovers). Collisions with local roads and the existing underground and above-ground infrastructure (electrical and gas collisions) will be resolved.

The first step after signing the contract is to take over the construction site, then design the investment and accept it with the client. We have chosen proven Czech companies to cooperate with us. Given the scale of our operations on the market, we also rely on our own resources, but we are constantly looking for construction partners – says Krzysztof Sokołowski, Country Manager at Budimex.

This is another tender in which the Polish general contractor has been appreciated on the Czech market. In December 2023. Budimex has concluded a contract for the construction of a polder in Kutrin. As part of the contract, a dry retention reservoir and a 146-metre-long and 17.8-metre-high dam will be built for the amount of PLN 113 million. The company is also waiting for the signing of a contract for the construction of a 21-kilometer section of the D11 road from the Czech Trutnov to the border with Poland.

Recently, Budimex has significantly accelerated its expansion into foreign markets. The Polish general contractor has been successfully establishing contacts in Germany and Slovakia for years. In December, the company signed its first contract in Latvia, where it will build a 230-kilometre section of the Rail Baltica railway line worth PLN 16 billion as part of an international consortium.
